Part 2 of 2 - What if the senior cannot drive? What are some possible options? First, consider if the senior needs a few "driving lessons" instead of assuming they cannot drive. AARP has driving classes for seniors. Go the www.AARP.org and search "driver safety courses." They have on-line and in-person classes. You might qualify for lower car insurance premiums after successfully taking the course.
Call a local Senior Center. Some provide transportation not only to their center, but also to other activities on and off the property.
Contact a local church which has some senior activities. Not always, but sometimes they have volunteer drivers. Always check driving records, insurance.
The government has senior affiliated services as well. Call you local Mayor's office for possible considerations. In the Virginia area, contact Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia, www.ssseva.org.
What if the senior cannot drive? What are some possible options?
Some cities provide senior bus services. They normally charge a low fee and will pick you up and take you back home. However, you need to call in advance and you may have to wait a while. Ask if they pick up at your home or if the senior needs to wait at a designated bus stop area.
Some disease specific organizations provide free transportation to doctor appointments. Consider the Cancer Association, Alzheimer's Association, Parkinson's, etc.
What about a private driver? This can mean a teenage relative, an adult child or friendly neighbor. Regardless, make sure their insurance and yours, are in place and they are allowed to drive your car if that is the case. If you hire a private company (search for Transportation or Medical Transportation) be sure they are bonded, have general liability insurance and investigate their drivers for any drug or criminal background. Expect to pay mileage and assistance costs if needed. Ask up front!
A cab or Uber is an option, of course. However, do not send a senior out in a cab or Uber car who has extreme mental or physical issues without having someone else go with them. The cab or Uber driver does not count!
Happy Trails!
